The problem
There are many people every day who find themselves unable to communicate due to a speech disability, while being at the same time bedridden or in a wheelchair. It is a frequent condition for patients being treated after a stroke or trauma that has damaged the nervous system, for people with degenerative diseases (from Parkinson’s to ALS and many others), non-self-sufficient elderly people and for patients in rehabilitation and intensive care units.
In particular, in the case of intensive care, non-sedated patients are conscious, but unable to communicate because they are intubated. In addition to physical and psychological suffering, there is the frustration of not being able to communicate with healthcare personnel or with loved ones, which causes significant suffering and post-traumatic stress disorder, as evidenced by several studies. This is just one of the many cases when people with an impairing health condition can find themselves imprisoned in their own – involuntary – silence.
Our solution
None of the proposals currently on the market overcomes these problems. And this is exactly why we started to develop our DICo® 1000 solution.
